Jayne Thorpe - Secretary

My parents say
have been horse mad from the minute I was born! I started riding when I was 3 years old and got my first pony when I was 7. From then I was a member of the Orkney Pony Club until I was 16 years old when I moved to Edinburgh – horses in tow! During my time in the Orkney pony club I was a member of the inter-branch dressage, SJ and ODE teams. I also competed in the Area 1 and Scotland & The Borders Tetrathlon and the North

Cup teams. I played pony club Polo for 3 years travelling over to Ireland – I never appreciated how much it took for my parents to pack up 3 children and 2 horses and travel from Orkney all over Scotland and Northern Ireland. When I moved to Edinburgh to finish school and go to University I joined Linlithgow and Stirlingshire Pony Club, before joining Edinburgh and District Riding Club in 2003 when I was 17 years old.

I joined the EDRC committee in March 2009 and became Secretary in November 2010.

Currently, I own two horses; Coppa is a 14.1hh, Arab X Welsh, chestn
ut mare. I have owned her for more years than I have fingers. She took me through the Pony Club ranks and I owe much of my success during my time in the Pony Club to her. Raggy is a 16.0hh ex-race horse, thoroughbred chestnut mare, whom I have owned for just over 3 years. With Raggy I compete at local riding club level doing dressage, SJ, ODE and a bit of in-hand showing. I also enjoy long hacks in the sunny weather.

I joined EDRC after I had attended one of their shows and found the atmosphere relaxed and everyone very friendly. I have competed in the team SJ, Hunter trials and Horse Trials which have been great fun and there is always a good team spirit. When I was asked to join the committee in 2009, I decided this was my chance to give back some of the hard work and commitment to the horse world that my parents had put in when I was younger, to allow others to enjoy attending local shows and events. I have found the riding club a great way of getting to know people and become involved in the equine community in the area. I would say to anyone who has newly moved to the area, that this is the club to join as everyone makes you feel welcome and it is great fun!

I started riding when I was 12 at Houston Farm Riding School and got my first loan pony, Coppa, when I was 13. I had her for 5 years and she taught me everything I know. Including how to hold on… We have done a bit of everything and I have been extremely lucky to have had such an amazing first pony and she inspired me to go for a career in the Equine industry.  I am currently a student at Oatridge College studying a HNC in Equine Studies and I joined the committee in November 2010. I have two jobs to save up for my summer trip to Canada where I hope to do some ranch work etc. I currently share my new horse Zarah with which I do mainly show jumping. Unfortunately for her she is now the horse I practice on for my college assignments but it seems fair as she is currently giving Coppa a run for her money on the ‘spirited’ front, so she’ll just have to endure endless hours of plaiting and fitness plans but she loves the attention really.  I am the youngest and one of the newest members of the committee and have been made to feel very welcome and involved in the club and look forward to help run some of the shows they hold. They are all very friendly and helpful and I would recommend the club to anybody new to the area looking to get their horse out to local shows and events, and to meet friendly like – minded people too.

I started riding at 6 and managed to persuade my parents to get me a pony when I was 8.  Misty was  a 12.2hh Welsh Mountain.   Since then I have always had a passion for horses and joined the Dalkeith & District Pony Club and progressed to the Edinburgh & District Riding Club when I moved onto horses.  Dino (I.D x T.B) who I had for 20 years, he was a joy to train and had immense fun competing in all sorts of events and achieved Foxhunter level at BSJA with him.  After I sadly lost my old horse, I gave up horses for one year but the addiction did not go away.  Since then I have had two horses and at present I have Finn (ISH) or Sunday name Finnisk Warrior.  Two years have passed now and Finn has come on leaps and bounds.  He loves his job and does whatever you ask him too with ears pricked and is a joy to work with. He is a great all rounder and loves to jump especially Working Hunter and BSJA.
